"Change Management" Abstract:
Projects are the instruments used to move organizations to a desired future state. Innate cultural resistance to any and all change exists to some degree in every organization. In 1995 OSU Medical Center and Grant Hospital merged their flight programs and created a new organization, I was an aviation manager. Resistance developed to the new organizational leadership. My experiences of this time period stimulated a personal interest to study the nuances of change.
The new organization, once completely standardized, became not standardized which was a safety risk. The ensuing process improvement project was called the “Standardization Project”. The presentation begins discussing Levels of Change, Types of Change, and the difference between Context and Content Change. There is a brief discussion of the Basic Steps for Transformational Change at the Organizational Level. Then moves the more content oriented tactical nuances of change at the project or level by examining author “John Kotter’s” major mistakes made during projects facing resistance.
In a former life Mark Collins was U.S. Army line unit Instructor pilot. His job not only evaluated trained pilots for maintenance of the basic skills but prepared them for tactical missions and skills to support and participate in the organizations tactical mission. He used simulation extensively both in table top and in Battle Drill format. The Instructor Pilot Handbook talks about 4 levels of learning. Rote, Understanding, and the skills of Application, and Correlation. He found that the adult learner achieved the higher levels of learning when situational simulation is used. His training objectives always strive to develop the skills to Apply and Correlation not simply to understand and pass a test.
